I found the S-Pen back but was surprised I never received a warning.
I was in bed when I realized the S-pen was missing and discovered it downstairs on my desk.
Is this me or don't I understand how the 'warning if left behind' works?

That setting was enabled. It's possible I walked upstairs with the screen on, but the phone was placed on my wireless charger and the screen was at one point off for hours.
When I took the phone off the charger this morning there were no warnings at all.
I'm not going to make an issue over this as I quickly found the S-Pen back.
I would have thought once I moved out of Bluetooth range I would have been alerted.

You're correct, it was in Bluetooth range. I put the phone on the charger, opened Spotify without starting a tune, pressed the button on the S-Pen at my desk, and when I went back to the phone, Spotify was playing.
