My phone was recently stolen and the phone was locked. Unfortunately I believe the thief was able to shut the phone down before I was able to do find my device phone wipe. I was wondering how they were able to do this? do I need to worry about all my data and photos being viewed? Ive got 2 years worth of personal information on that phone.

Your phone has internal security protocols that would stop the ' everyday ' thief.

It would have had to be one in a million chance of them guessing these security protocols.

As you had a pin or pattern lock turned On they shouldn't have been able to shut the phone Off.

Maybe the phone's battery died 🤔

You should however change passwords for critical apps such as banking etc.

Your network should have locked the sim card as long as you've reported this to them too.

When they send you another sim card you may have to re contact them to have this account lock deactivated.

If you backed up your photo's to OneDrive or another online vault then you shoukd still have your photo's stored.

If I can be of any further help then please don't hesitate to ask.  😎

I would not be concern with Banking apps, unless they were setup to use a password manager and no need to enter the password. Something that I have not seen. Banking apps log one out very soon or immediately after using them.

Banking apps are very secure in general. However, I would contact the bank(s) to deregister the phone as a banking device.

Hi @Scottlv25

Which method did you use to lock the phone? Did you setup a pin to unlock the phone? If so, thieves should not be able to turn off or restart the phone from the lock state. The phone will ask for the pin to restart, shutdown even to disable the WiFi.

I agree with @BandOfBrothers that the most likely cause was the phone running out battery or is it is kept on on area/room where the phone has no signal.

Were you able to check the last known location of the phone?
