Editing none-saved already dialled, numbers

Hi .. I'm looking to try to edit a none saved phone number quickly. I dialled in too many numbers then realised when I got a wrong dial tone.. trying to copy and paste the old number to edit it seems impossible. Is there something I'm missing?  I don't want to save and then edit I want to be able to copy, edit, then paste. Why am I finding it so difficult/time consuming?

Try opening the phone app,tap Recents tabs, Tap the relevant phone number, tap the menu with 3 lines, press and hold the number, select copy.

Go back and tap keypad tap the input field, press and hold and paste the number, edit as needed.
