YouTube battery drain & overheating issues

The YouTube app causes my Samsung phone to overheat after a random amount of time. Since I can’t uninstall and reinstall the app, clearing the cache and storage or force stopping it only provides a temporary fix. This issue seems to be specific to the YouTube app, as it only started happening in the past few weeks. As a YouTube Premium subscriber, this makes the app nearly unusable.

On Reddit you can see a lot of similar posts.

With overheating I meant the phone getting quite warm to the touch. It doesn't do that for any other video app - Instagram uses HDR, too. And if I watch YouTube in the browser, it doesn't happen either. I am on premium - so not getting any ads. Maybe it only appears to impact a few users...

I'll try this - but what's the point of buying a flagship phone if you can't watch YouTube videos on 720p and above? 😂

Same as you'd have to slow down your Ferrari if there is a bumpy road. 😊

I never had to before. Clearly a bug in the YouTube app. So Samsung or Google should sort this out. Many people on Reddit have the same issue.

Android 15 has been a buggy mess even for Google, which is why Samsung has had to delay their one ui 7 as well.
It's just what it is.

That's why I literally check for app updates almost every single day on both Samsung and Google store.

I agree. That doesn't have anything to do with the YouTube app or android 14, though.

I personally have cases on both my devices so I rarely notice an increase in temperature unless it is significant enough. YouTube rarely if ever affects temperatures on my phones, however if I were to crank brightness levels up to near maximum, that might be another story. As it stands now though, I run my devices at 30% fixed brightness most of the time.

I used auto brightness. And didn't change anything. I assume it was a buggy update causing the issue.

An update from Samsung support:

Your logs do show certain CPU overloads from YouTube at certain periods.

Whilst this is not something we can reproduce, it has been reported to YouTube for review and possible resolution provided in future updates.

This has already been reported to YouTube but review of this and resolution can take some time unfortunately, we cannot speculate or provide any information on when a resolution will be provided as its not our feature here at Samsung. This is an embedded app of Android.

Same here on regular S23. The phone was amazing for a couple of months and then suddenly YouTube app started to overheat it and drain the battery like crazy. It is clearly a problem with 19version of YouTube as uninstalling it back to 18 version solves the problem. But Google is going to update that app anyway silently within 24hrs even if you turn off auto update. This is getting ridiculous as it has been 7-8 months like that. I'm a premium user and can't really use YouTube seeing 1% battery drop every 2min. You guys need to sort it out with Google as it can't look like that.
