An update on phone happened this morning and when I went to use it, it requested a pin code (which I have never set up for the new phone - purchased yesterday - I only set up the finger recognition)....I now cannot access phone at all as tried to restore factory settings....any advice please?

Hey @Jenny52. @Bigtasty65 is correct, you would need to have entered a PIN when first setting up your phone. After installing the update, your phone will have restarted, and each time you restart your phone you need to reenter this PIN before using other unlock methods.
If you've forgotten your PIN the best method use to unlock would be by using Find My Mobile. Check out this guide here: https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/i-cant-unlock-my-device/

The default pin for Samsung is 0000. I assume that was tried?

There is a PUK code that your phone provider has (if you use their SIM card). If you enter the wrong pin code incorrectly so many times, you'll be requested for a PUK code.
I'd be curious to learn how this is resolved.

That's a false statement. You have to set a backup "password", not "pin"
