Notifications Disaster: App Badge Count "Feature" (Bug!)

As has been reported to Samsung multiple times, when clearing notifications from the drop-down panel (from home-screen or lock-screen), the notification counter is completely removed from the app badge on the homescreen.

I cannot believe it is 2023 and this feature" (bug) is still present.

Example use-case: you have 5 unread WhatsApp messages from different people, you open and read ONE of the messages, the app badge counter is now REMOVED even though there are still 4 unread messages. If you forget to go back to that app, or do not receive any more messages, you have no way of knowing whether you have messages or not. This behaviour is the same if you open the app, or just clear the notification from notification panel.

Now imagine this same scenario - but you have WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Outlook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Messages, etc., etc. and without those badge counts you are losing track of literally everything. It is one of the most broken features I have ever experienced on any handheld device.

The solution to "do not clear the notifications" is not acceptable, because users will often clear the unimporant notifications as they appear (WhatsApp, etc.), in order to leave room for important notifications (emails, etc.).

It is especially unacceptable based on all the feedback/complaints provided to Samsung. A couple of references here:

https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/other-smartphones/badge-notification-count-since-update/td-p/467...

https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/galaxy-s10-series/will-samsung-ever-fix-the-badges-that-go-away-...

I am aware that this was an added Android "feature", but at the very least it should be a selectable option for the user, better yet the "feature" should be removed/reverted back to keep all counts for unread messages.

This has been an open topic for 5+ years, can someone from Samsung please listen to the feedback from your customers and push a fix for this issue?

Currently, after buying a new Galaxy S22 Ultra, I am already looking to sell and replace this otherwise brilliant phone due to this issue.

Thanks,

David

Sadly this is an Android issue, only Google can fix it and they clearly have no interest in doing so.

I have tried to upgrade my trusty (but tired) old P20 Pro which runs on Android 10.  The badges work perfectly on it but as I say it only has Android 10.  So far I have tried and returned a Pixel 7 Pro and a OnePlus 10 Pro and both have the same problem with the badges that you described.  I was going to try an S23 Ultra next but clearly this is a lost cause.

If anyone reading this knows how to fix it with a third party app etc them please speak up but I think I will be paying for a new battery in the P20 Pro and just skipping the new phones as they are less useful than a 6 year old one.

Bonjour,

J'ai le même problème aussi sur mon S23 !!! (ce n'était pas le cas avec mon Huawei P20 Pro sous Android 10)

Avez-vous trouvé une solutions ?

I found this thread because I just made the switch to the Galaxy Ultra from IPhone and have the same complaint, notification badges should stay after you swipe away the notification.

I installed the Microsoft Launcher, works perfectly!

This is an interesting comment made by Wardo5757.  I have returned numerous new handsets and have had my old P20 Pro repaired because the unread badges no longer work as they did.

Nova Launcher etc are all broken as they run of the OS code that Google has changed but apparently Microsoft Launcher does magically work.

I don't have a new phone to test it on but I thought I would follow up and see if anyone can confirm and give details on how to get this to work as Wardo5757 claims.  It would be very nice to get a new handset that works...

I don't get it! If Microsoft launcher can solve it, why Samsung Home UI can't?

Samsung?

Stumbling there and I 100% agree. This "feature" is insanely stupid let alone not enabling us to select it's behaviour. It's just BAD UX. I love my freshly new S24 but it actually makes me thinking about selling it for an iPhone...

Thanks for your effort.
This issue still does not fix for many years. I also expect the fix for this badge notification.
