Please double check the permissions for messages and if you've used a downloaded tone then please try another one. 

You could clear the cache of the app.

Settings > Apps > Messages > Storage > Clear Cache >

@kr3c: Please try opening the Messages app > Tap the 3 dots in the top right > Settings > Notifications > Allow sound and vibration (On) > Notification categories > New messages > Alert (On) > Sound (Choose from the list of options, and adjust the 'Notification sound volume' slider towards the top of the screen so its at a suitable level).
