I think the original cable supplied was a USB-C to USB-A.

Are you using a USB-C to USB-A cable coupled with a USB-A to USB-C adapter or a straight USB-C to USB-C cable.

Nope, it came with a USB-C to USB-C cable only.  It was working properly but after yesterday's software update it's giving the following alert; " make sure the cable and charger are properly connected and also having the red X on the battery icon.

Can you try another cable, one you know is working. Or try your own cable with another device and see what happens.
I take it the phone was original brand new when purchased, from an authorised Samsung outlet/reseller (not an unauthorised 3rd party) and the cable you are using was the original one supplied in the box.

After any update it is also recommended to wipe the cache partition

Plug into a working PC or laptop or other Samsung device

I updated my phone today, and this is just the same issue i've been experiencing.
Just like you, I use the same USB C - USB C cable that came in the phones accessories package.

Everythng was working just fine before the update. Samsung should really do better and fix this issue

My phone was worked properly till yesterday. I updated my phone and i got same issue.

mine came with a usb c to c cable. it charges other devices, but not mine.
