A50 not making sounds on message replies!

When someone replies quickly to my text messages, I am not hearing any sound. This is quite frustrating because I am missing many text messages. I have gone into settings and made sure  volume is turned on, etc.  I've tried everything I can think of and it's still not working! VERY FRUSTRATING. Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

is this happening while the phone is locked or while you are in messages ?
