Hi,
I'm the owner of a Samsung Watch 4 LTE edition. Besides Gpay issue that I raised on a different post, I'm also experiencing another problem, that it seems is a common issue and has been raised by users of Samsung Watch 4 LTE on different countries i.e. overheating problem when the watch is used as standalone, not connected to the phone.
I also exercised the overheating issue when I used the watch not connected to the phone (I have number sharing service activated on the watch), all was good when 4G signal is good, I was able to receive calls on the watch without having the phone with me, but always when I enter in areas with weak signal, I believe the watch is starting to search for a better signal and it gets very warm, so it enters in airplane mode, and after a few seconds it shutdowns.
This issue is quite annoying and has been raised by many users on different countries, and so far, Samsung didn't sent any software update to fix this problem.
Honestly, not being able to make payments using Gpay on the watch (see another post on this matter), together with the overheating issue when using the watch in standalone mode, without the phone, these make the Watch 4 LTE edition watch to look more like a smartfit bracelet, not as a smartwatch as has been currently labeled.

You can see it in action here:

I'm in France and took mine to a Samsung authorised service centre who took it in for repair under warranty. Got it back on Thursday. Apparently replacement back and a software upgrade. Set it up again and it did another software update and I set LTE to always on and it ran fine all day Friday. Ran fine all day Saturday. Charged each night. Had WiFi and Bluetooth on and lte on all the time, Spotify running now and then, email, Messenger alerts and still had 33% battery now at 10pm when I put it on charge when now going to bed. Will keep you posted on any issues but happy for now.

You can try to switch the 4G network to 3G is such a weak signal areas, it may help to troubleshoot the overheating problem. Once you switch from 4G to 3G, then the data connection is still good and enough to use and it's stops overheating. Steps to do so. Go to the Settings and tap on Connections, then go to the Mobile networks > Network mode, then choose 3G only.

I own a watch 4 classic LTE which has this overheating problem, that makes it almost useless as a phone. It's not a problem of weak signals, because even in areas with a very strong signal, it overheats. It's a question of poor design. It's a shame that Samsung is selling such a product. I've owned several LTE smartwatches so far, even heap Chinese no-name brands and this is the worst of all. Soon will arrive my new one, which IS NOT a Samsung.

I'm from India, I had the same issue and it was driving me nuts. I did a lot of research online, but couldn't find anything useful. All I knew was that it was not a hardware issue because I successfully used it in a different country. So I decided to switch Carriers. In India, we have the option to keep your existing phone number and port to a different carrier. So I switched from Airtel to Jio 4G and it worked. Haven't had a glitch in forever. I suggest you try that. I don't know what is going on technically but I do know it works. If you do go through with it, let me know how it goes

Same here. I can turn data off and at least have phone connectivity which seems to work slightly more reliably.

Has anyone started a class action on this? I still owe on these watches and they are completely useless! I bought them to use without a phone for my daughters!

They're not interested. I have a heart condition and bought this watch in case I got out of range of my phone to be able to call Emergency Services. They just aren't interested because I doesn't work and they know it.
A refund to be able to go elsewhere would be good though.

I also have this overheating issue and had been hoping for a fix. The main time I have data turned on is when I take the dogs for a short (20 min) walk, also listening to Spotify and tracking my walk. Less than 10 minutes in my watch overheats, stops everything and goes into airplane mode. I would have expected Samsung to fix this before now. It's VERY disappointing.
