That's terrible advice. People move countries, you know? Samsung is in the wrong here, not giving users an easy way for changing the region setting.
God bless those who mod Samsung apps to free all the features we've paid for and are available in hardware, but blocked by shortsightedness.

Hi Jordan,
Could you please direct me to where it is advised? It is never advised at the time of the purchase. But since as a moderator here you claimed that it is advised to purchase the product in your region, please point us to the advice.
I bought a watch in Germany and gifted it to my sister in Saudi Arabia only to discover that it is region locked. I am so p****d that I am moving away from all Samsung devices and vowed never to look at samsung again. Same as HP. Stopped using HP products 7 years ago when they locked the printer via firmware remotely for not using their cartridges.

I've just bought a samsung galaxy 6 watch in Australia to use in Australia and I can't even get it started as it has the wrong country/region so I can't get past that. Do you have any suggestions as to how to get it going.

The region is locked and cannot be changed. Customers are not informed of this, and the packaging does not indicate this. Essentially, you would have to predict that there will be a regional problem before you purchase the watch in order to ask at time of purchase. It is clearly very unlikely that customers would do that.
It's pretty shocking that these devises are being sold with insufficient information, which is actually a criminal offence in the UK (misleading omissions, regulation 6 of the Unfair Trading Regulations 2008: insufficient information about a product that customers need to make an imformed choice if this would cause the customer to make a transactional decision they would not have taken otherwise).
I was unfortunately mis-sold by Samsung in china and have had no luck in getting my money back, but clearly this practice is commonplace in Samsung outlets globally. Each region of Samsung is also technically a separate company, so you can only log complaints with the Samsung company you purchased from (for me, Samsung China).
I hope this information will help someone who's been caught out by SamsungUK.

I just bought a watch from Amazon in the United States. During intial setup after selecting English it was only showing South American countries and not United States. The message went away and said to continue setup on my phone.
I am not sure if the watch is locked to a different region or not. When I looked up the full model number (full model number not shown on Samsung's store on Amazon) it looks like it is a Latin America model. sm-r960nzsalta
Will I have issues in the future?

You cannot select India as the watch is made for Europe.

India is not available in the list as the watch is made for Europe.
