When I lift one bud out of my ear and put it back in the music doesn't resume playing, is that normal or should I get a replacement unit?

Just using mine, i normally use both or just the right or left (phone calls), always pauses and resumes.

That said sometimes Spotify is an issue and I need to manually press play.
