I have purchased a USB-C to HDMI cable with the intention of connecting my phone's screen to my TV. But when I connect it, the USB settings on my phone won't let me change the host device to from the connected device to "This phone". I select "This phone" and it loads for a few seconds, then says "Couldn't switch". Below the two options to choose for host device, "Connected device" or "This phone", there are some blocked out options that I can't select for the purpose of the connection, such as charging only, files transfers, MIDI.

Can someone please explain to me what I need to do to connect my phone's screen to the TV's HDMI input this way? I have tried to different USB-C to HDMI cables on three different TVs. I want to be able to play audio-video from my phone to non-smart TVs.

You need an adaptor supporting MHL for this to work.
