Samsung TV calibration

Hello, fellow Samsung TV owners!

As the owner of several Samsung models—77S95D, 77S95C, 55S90D, and an older QE55Q6FNA TV—I’ve noticed a common issue across these TVs: the calibration functionality isn't working fully as expected. Let me elaborate.

Excluding the older QE55Q6FNA, which has problems even with the 2-point white balance (it's not linear, and gain controls affect the RGB graph from 50 IRE down to 0), I want to focus on the newer models. While the newer TVs perform significantly better, there are still some persistent issues with the 20-point white balance calibration in HDR mode.

The main problem occurs when enabling HGIG in Game Mode, specifically with Game HDR Basic. The 20-point white balance adjustments seem to have no effect at all—no matter what values I change or how significant the adjustments are, nothing changes in the output. On the other hand, with Game HDR turned off (without HGIG), the 20-point white balance works, but in a strange and inconsistent manner. For example:

  • Adjusting RGB values at 5% seems to affect the RGB graph at 15%, 20%, and 25%.

  • Changing RGB at 10% does nothing at all.

  • Changing RGB at 15% affects the graph at 30%.

  • RGB values for 20% and 25% also appear to have no effect.

  • Moving to higher levels, adjusting at 70% and 75% affects the 65% point in different ways, and adjustments at 85% and 90% impact the 75% point—again, inconsistently.

With such behavior, it’s unfortunately impossible to achieve a proper calibration, leaving these high-end TVs somewhat unbalanced in terms of color accuracy. For reference, I am using a colorimeter, a pattern generator, and calibration software on PC, such as Calman and HCFR. It's a real shame for high-end models to face this kind of issue.

I don't believe this is a hardware problem. It seems like something that could potentially be resolved through a firmware update, at least for the 2024 models. My question to the community is: has anyone else experienced similar problems? And how can we effectively communicate this to Samsung in hopes that they address it? I'm not convinced that contacting first-tier support via chat would be effective, as they may not fully understand the technical details of the issue.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

You could check the picture and HDR recommendations on Rtings, at least a guide and can see if any adjustments help.  This one is for the S95D  https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/s95d-oled/settings    I do not have the models in question though.

I do not work for Samsung or make Samsung Products but provide independent advice and valuable contributions.

On Rtings, much of the information provided is inaccurate. Additionally, calibration varies for every panel, even for the same model, so you cannot use the same settings on your TV. Furthermore, I would like to communicate to Samsung that their 20-point white balance does not work as intended for HDR. I am also looking for a platform where I can share this information with them in the hope that they can resolve the issue with a future update

Hi

I just got the 65" S95D and wondered if it was worth calibrating it. I don't know if it's worth buying a CalMan or one of the others out there if it's not working right or if the change is not worth it/not that noticeable. A few have said just use Filmmaker and don't bother.
