Hi @John18051967 Welcome to the Samsung community
A number of modern models have the facility to record Freeview to USB, the lower end models though tend not to support it. As far as USB drives go Samsung tend to recommend hard drives with an external power supply and a maximum capacity of 2 TB and 5400 rpm, however customers have generally found USB sticks powered devices to be ok.
An alternative is to use catch up services via the internet if suitable.
I do not work for Samsung or make Samsung Products but provide independent advice and valuable contributions.

Can you confirm what is considered to be a lower end model? I have a Crystal UHD DU8070UXXU and no option to record is coming up when using Freesat (not tried Freeview as no aerial in living room).
I have tried previous answers from https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/tv/schedule-recording-problem-solved/td-p/656836 and https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/tv/tv-scheduled-viewing-and-recording-not-working/td-p/388556 without joy, yet your instruction manual (https://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/202411/20241109115010001/BN81-25561C-620_EUG_ROPDVBEUD...) clearly states that recording is possible, so which is true?
