My TV is UE 50 RU7402. My speakers are Edifier R1280DB.
If I connect them through optical (toslink), I can't control the volume with Samsung's One remote. When I press volume up or down, the tv shows on screen the word "optical" and nothing happens.
Is there a way to control the volume?
If I understand correctly, when I search through TV settings it is possible to control speakers or AV receivers from other brands when connected with optical cable. So the optical connection isn't "fixed". Why not having it "open" for all brands?
Is this going to change in the future with an update?
P.S. If I connect them through bluetooth I can control the volume with One remote just fine. But I prefer the sound through optical. Also, I have to re-pair the speakers every time I power on the TV.

Thanks, for the clarification.
I know that CEC works with HDMI, but the volume can be controlled with the optical because the optical port on Samsung is not "fixed" but "variable". The problem is that probably the firmware makes it variable for certain combinations of TV models and Speakers. I thought that maybe the firmware keeps the port variable for that specific DAC that you suggested.
Anyway, thanks for your input.

My remote for my UN75TU7000FXZA won't control my Onkyo HT-R340 receiver hooked up via optical. Receiver does not have hdmi ports
My previous Samsung TV and remote controlled it just fine.

Wish I had found this thread previously. Bought a 65" Q95T 2 weeks ago - set it up and linked my Samsung soundbar and the one remote controlled it perfectly via optical cable. Because it kept failing whilst recording I did a reset and the soundbar can no longer be controlled via optical (smart connect - yes - but needs doing every time I turn on).
Spent one whole hour on Samsung Support line last night listening to a girl going through the manual repeatedly put on hold. What a dreadful experience - turn it off, turn it on, unplug it, replug it etc.
Eventually she concluded that my reset must have updated the firmware and my soundbar was no longer supported - it's a Samsung soundbar!! So I asked how I roll back the firmware but whilst on hold again I gave up - ever so slightly this side of becoming suicidal.
Because it was the reset that that seemed to trigger this I was toying with another reset to see if I got a different result - I presume others have tried this though? I must admit I wasn't looking forward to going through it all again.
So just how does one escalate an issue to Samsung? That customer support line was next to hopeless.

Appreciate I'm replying to myself here but bit the bullet and did a reset and now the one remote is once again controlling the volume on my optical connected Samsung soundbar. Very strange.

Erratic behavior in between resets also indicates bad software. As you read through this thread and other forums, many people with samsung soundbars have trouble with volume control.
P.S. Your experience with Samsung's support was far better than mine.

This worked for me. Thanks for the clear instructions... so helpful and easy to solve what should be an obvious issue. Thx!

It happened to me too...
The solution is simple;
-disconnect all external devices(optical, hdmi, cable box)while tv is ON
-turn tv OFF for a few minutes
-pull out the batteries of the smart remote for a few minutes
-insert the batteries back into the smart remote
-turn tv ON and reconnect all devices
-a message will pop up asking you to set up the smart remote
-go to SOURCE-UNIVERSAL REMOTE-NEW DEVICE-HOME THEATRE-search your audio device, if not found in default list and select it, select optical and you will be prompted to test if the audio device has turned off whilst your smart remote is pointed at it.Retry test untill it turns off.
That’s it!

Thanks - will give this a go tomorrow. Following a full reset mine lasted about a month before it stopped controlling my Samsung sound bar again. Your method is a lot more attractive but still a stretch for a tv that cost £2k and that’s only being asked to control a sound bar that’s the same make as it is! Hopefully Samsung will issue a fix but having talked to their “technical” help (I use the phrase loosely) I don’t hold out much hope.

Hi Inkotro,
So I followed your instructions except I didn’t unplug everything - I just unplugged the sound bar - and it still worked. That’s a far better system than a full reset that’s for sure! Many thanks for figuring this out.
Still hoping against hope Samsung get round to fixing it one day.

Thanks! That worked for my Denon.
