Hello everyone, I cannot find the setting to disable the on screen volume display on my Q80T. Is there a hidden setting somewhere? If not, can we get the option added by Samsung?

Thank you!

You are right...

The Shield context was more relevant than I realized.  I stopped seeing the onscreen display when I switched to optical output, and I thought it was disabled.  As it turns out, if I use the Samsung volume control, it proudly displays "Optical" in the most annoying manner possible.

I guess I got lucky... the Shield's CEC control works great.

I'm giving up Dolby Atmos, but it's a good sacrifice.

I’m using the Sonos Arc sound bar and that don’t use optical lead. The old Sonos bar uses optical lead and I had the old Sonos stuff and the volume bar didn’t show up. It only started when I upgraded to the new Sonos gear in every room of my house. I got rid of the old Sonos bar as it don’t do Atmos  sound that all the new programs and films are using that and it makes a huge difference to sound quality.

Copy...

Bummer that a HDMI to your Sonos soundbar still displays the volume.  I don't see it with my setup of  Apple TV (HDMI) Denon HT Receiver (HDMI) Samsung QN85QN90AFXZA.  All controlled by a single remote (usually the Apple Remote or a Harmony remote).  All volume is controlled through the Apple TV to the Receiver and not the TV.  BTW, I also have a Shield Pro and it works in a similar manner with HDMI with no volume displayed on the TV.

However,  The volume always displays and can not be disabled with the TV only ON, or with receiver OFF and... Apple TV HDMI (Receiver Off w/HDMI pass-through) HDMI  Samsung QN85QN90AFXZA

Glad there are work-arounds for some of us (the minority)... but as we have all voiced here for four years, Samsung should fix this!  Take care!

I guess I wasn't clear... I got the Sonos Playbar which doesn't have HDMI.  I'm using an optical cable.  The bar set to respond to the Shield's volume control, so the TV doesn't even know it's happening, and it doesn't display anything.

If I pick up the Samsung OEM remote, and hit a volume key, it displays "Optical" in a completely non-helpful dialog, just as big as the volume one.

Good news! Nearly 5 years later and absolutely nothing is different. This gigantic intrusion on the screen is intentional…. It’s a tactic to get people to buy a Samsung soundbar. I have a Samsung soundbar on a TV in my bedroom and it somehow bypasses the obnoxious on screen display. The soundbar itself is terrible, often losing connect to the Bluetooth subwoofer that is mere inches away.

There was a post on another thread that was supposedly escalating this issue to Samsung engineers, but that was a year ago. The Samsung engineers must be the worst engineers on earth if they could not figure out how to create a toggle option for something embedded in the UI software.

This experience does solidify one thing: I will never buy another Samsung product again. A multi-billion dollar company that doesn’t address issues raised by their customers is not a company I want to do business with.

I think it's a failure to listen to their customers, and not an upsell tactic.

To the best of my knowledge, the problem occurs with Samsung's high-end ("better integrated") soundbars, too.   If you have an ARC connection, I'd expect you to see it.

I got away from it by getting a soundbar that responds to remote signals which my Samsung TV ignores.  My Q950T soundbar is up for sale right now.   My Sonos soundbar gets a constant volume input, and sets the output volume without the TV knowing.  For this to work seamlessly, I guess you need an appropriate controller, and the one for the Nvidia Shield fits my needs.

This experience (plus my refrigerator) has left me wanting to avoid Samsung products in the future.

I started a change.org online petition for this.   Sign and spread the word and maybe we can make them listen to us.   This is beyond redic at this point.

I agree - nothing may come of it but I am game - it is a preposterous "feature" and if there is some evil reason to not have made some passable fix in all this time - I would like to hear it.
