Older TV connects to the internet but cannot browse - UN40ES6100

From the menu, I can set up my network using its password. It says it is connected to the internet. When I click on the browser app, I get an error-exe-001 message, which from reading elsewhere, implies I need an update. However, from the support menu, no update is available. I did the two minute power unplug but nothing changed. The only app that works is the weather, which must go to a hard wired ip address or something like that. I'm wondering if I should give the tv a fixed ip address if there is some DSN issue or is that a red herring.
