I've a Samsung led smart TV 40inch not sure on the model number can get it if needed. But the screen has just plused a bright white light for less than a second while off (on standby mode) only noticed as it was in the middle of the night.

Has anyone else had this and more importantly is it safe?

Don't think the TV is a year old yet.

Hi Markcool I fell asleep on the settee the other night and woke up in the dark with the tv off and also noticed a flash every so often with my Samsung 49” Curve tv. I decided to time the space between each flash and believe it or not it was 45 seconds between each one🤔. The following night I waited till it was dark and it did the same again, I even told my Mrs to time it and sure enough again every 45 seconds?. Might be worth timing yours for curiosity more than anything?. I reported the fault as I still have 7 months left in the tv and was suggested I took a video or pic which is a bloody nightmare because it doesn’t show in the video because it’s pitch black when it happens and my phone won’t focus in?. Hope this helps.

Update! I did try a few changes in settings a while back to no avail, but after maybe a month or so of the infamous flash being caught on my camera, I get no alerts from my cam about any more flashes. Maybe it was some “atmosphere learning” technique or Samsung was taking pictures of my room setup while I was sleeping to feature in their upcoming commercials, I don’t know. No more false cam notification to review in the morning!!

Possibly TV checking for updates?

Mescalamba has got it right here: it’s the TV on standby checking in the background for updates or any necessary automatic re-tuning. (The tech guys at our end have confirmed that the TV isn't actually switching on and will not consume excess energy.)

Appreciate it can be a bit disconcerting when you discover it happening though.

My Sky set-top box does something similar when it’s on standby too, where it whirs away when it's doing it. I now usually turn it all off at the mains just before going to bed both to save on electricity and to not have it disturbing my sleep in the wee small hours.

Hello: Mine started doing something very similar. It will not respond to any command to turn it on. What should I do?

Thank you!

Hello, I have a Hisense 55 inch TV and a Motorola cell phone. I'm trying to figure out similar experiences. While watching some YouTube videos on my phone or TV they will flash about 2/3 vertically measured Bright White with the remaining 1/3 Black. I was in slow playback at 25% speed and saw how the screen was divided. The line was straight across with above white & below black. Both the phone & TV felt like someone was taking my photograph it was so bright. In fact I've been researching & speaking out on some hidden conspiracy topics & even typed in the comments," Did you just take my picture" to YouTube or channel presenter. Of course no response. It was difficult even finding this forum. Most information was regarding methods & legalities of posting photos or reposting other's. Crazy thing, I tried to pause the video right on the flash. Timed it twice, just missing it. I got to two seconds before and kept hitting pause then play & you know it didn't do it. It repeated 20 seconds later. In slow motion quite a few frames display in 1 second. I was more looking for damaging or programming the viewers mind, as I didn't think Tvs had a camera. I did get an instant headache afterwards.

I’m experiencing the same thing with my NEO QLED tv. Their certified tech came out to fix the issue, but they refused to fix the problem since we couldn’t re create the issue. Oh and this was after they told me they knew what the issue was and had ordered the parts for it. Maine state law requires a seller or manufacturer to fix a defective product and this doesn’t seem to be happening 🤔

Does Samsung ever respond to any of these issues? I’m tired of being ignored. There is a clear issue that needs to be dealt with.

Hi @CMTw ,

Are you experiencing a random flash when your NEO QLED TV is on standby? If so, a little earlier in the thread I posted some insight into why that might be happening.  (My post here: https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/tv/led-tv-screen-randomly-flashes-bright-white-when-off-standby/... )

Our colleagues at Samsung AV/TV Tech advised us that the occasional flash of light on standby is normal behaviour: it happens when a TV on standby briefly wakes up to check for updates. The flashes shouldn’t happen if you switch off your TV at the mains.

But if you’re experiencing a different issue with your TV please share more details about it, and we’ll spin your posts into a new thread to get more attention on it. 🙂👍

(Also worth bearing in mind that you're posting on the UK & Ireland/European Samsung Community forum here. If you're based in the States, it might be worth posting the issue on our US Community too, if you haven't already done so: https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Samsung-Community/ct-p/us )

I have 49" with the same problem that I only noticed last night, the flash was accompanied by what I would describe as a fizzing sound, and when I turn on the TV now the left side of the panel is darker !!

Any ideas on that, at the moment I'm thinking it's scrap ?

I haven’t received any suggestions from Samsung. My guess is they have no idea why this is happening. They should replace the TV.
