Hi guys

I have a Q9FN TV and planning on getting the Q90R soundbar. I have some questions regarding it. Would appreciate some input

1) according to a Samsung Customer Care dude, Samsung TVs are not Dolby Atmos compatible. Meaning, if connected to a soundbar (eg. Q90R soundbar), the TV apps won't transmit Atmos to the soundbar. True?

If not true, then my next question is:

2) Dolby Atmos and DTS-X require eARC and HDMI 2.1 to function. (This is according online techies) True? If so, how do the current TVs (Q900r excluded) transmit these formats?

3) if the above questions are true, what's the best way to get the best out of my TV and Soundbar?

Thanks guys

Ps. My name is not Atmos, I mistakenly typed in the topic in my username slot and can't undo it.

Hi

I was never able to play Dolby Atmos on my setup yet (Samsung TV and Q90 soundbar). Netflix only plays 5.1. I gave up and going wait until I change my TV to something else that suspport Atmost. Did you manage to get it working?

It's still amazing soundbar tho. Sounds great.

Please have a look at this TV review, at "Audio Passthrough":

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/q90-q90r-qled

"Sadly, this TV doesn't support DTS or eARC. It likely does support lossy Atmos passthrough from Dolby Digital Plus sources, including the native Netflix app."

So, the TV does support Atmos????

As the previous comment says, no.

Is there a way to connect everything through an Atmos receiver and send sound to the bar and picture to tv separately?

I found this device which promises to solve all Atmos problems for any TV that does not support eARC.  The eARC adapter (Arcana) sits between TV and sources and sends full audio up to Dolby Atmos TrueHD from any external HDMI source to any eARC sound system (such as Sonos Arc, Bose 500/700).

Why not just connect it to soundbar passthrough and skip getting useless expensive device?

If you have a soundbar with passthrough great...Sonos Arc and Bose 500/700 do not have passthrough.  I already have a full Sonos infrastructure so the Arc made sense for integration (and IMHO sounds good even without full Atmos). But, I still want the capability and other than no eARC support, I'm perfectly happy with the picture of my 75Q9Fn.  So, the Arcana costs less than a new comparable model TV and I remove the eARC restruction regardless of TV and source components.  In addition it enables DolbyVision content from an LLDV source (Xbox1, FireStick/Cube, ShieldPro, ATV4k, etc) to the Q9fn via HDR10 to improve picture quality.  More info: https://hdguru.com/hd-fury-unveils-worlds-first-hdmi-earc-adapter/

Guys it's really easy. I have a Samsung QE65Q9FNA but to be honest this fix should work with any TV. All you need to do is plug any device which is Atmos compatible and use this for Netflix instead of using the Netflix on your TV.

I was only able to get 5.1 before so I've just bought myself the Amazon Cube which is Atmos compatible. It was just over £100 and I could have got away with the 4K firestick for half this price, but hey ho. Anyway, I plugged it into my Pioneer SCLX58 receiver (also Atmos compatible), went through the Cube setup, installed Netflix and now when I search for a movie previously showing as 5.1 it shows the Dolby Atmos logo.

I then stood under one of my ceiling speakers and I could hear sound for the first time. Happy days

Please note this will only work for Dolby Atmos sound. Dolby Vision etc still wont work as the hardware in Samsung's TV's don't support it

Any Samsung TV not newer with an eArc HDMI port will not pass True ATMOS. It will at best beable to play DD+ etc. on the Samsung TV native apps. This is compressed ATMOS which is called lossly sound. If you want lossless ATMOS you either need to buy a newer TV that supports this with an eArc port or you can purchase an add on device called the ARCANA at https://hdfury.com/product/4k-arcana-18gbps/. You will need to have a firestick 4k, Apple 4k etc to connect to this device and this will convert the audio to true ATMOS out of your Sonos ARC back to your tv. You can even connect a 4k switch and get ATMOS out of multiple sources if required or buy a new TV with eARC. If you are in my boat to where you bought a Samsung 4K tv a couple years ago and dropped 5 grand on I went this route so I didn't have to pay that much out of pocket again. It would be fantastic if Samsung was able to update firmware for their a little older 4k tv's but why would they when people just buy new. Its the name of the game. Hope this helped you out.
