2020 QLED T models (Q80T, Q90T, Q800T, Q900T) HDR game mode brightness / local dimming bug

I bought a Q80T a couple of days ago and have noticed a really annoying issue when using the tv with the combination of HDR and game mode.

I'm fairly certain this is a software bug in the TV since I can reproduce this issue with 100% accuracy, and it happens on the dot at the same moment every time. It's basically on a timer.

Basically when the game is displaying a HDR signal and game mode is enabled, exactly after 6 minutes the brightness of the TV suddenly drops by around 20 (50 -> 30). The value of brightness setting doesn't actually change however. Messing with the brightness setting does not restore the brightness to it's original state, but changing the local dimming setting from standard to low and then back to standard does. Switching game mode off and then back on also fixes the issue, but then it happens again EXACTLY after 6 minutes (I've timed this with a stopwatch).

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Or can someone maybe test this on their TV to see if you can reproduce it?

Exact repro steps on how I can reproduce this 100% of the time on the PS4 Pro:

  1. Set brightness to max (50)
  2. Set local dimming to standard (bug happens on high as well)
  3. Enable game mode
  4. Turn off game motion plus
  5. Turn off intelligent mode and all the brightness related settings in eco settings, as these can influence the brightness level of the tv.
  6. Launch a game that runs in HDR
  7. Start your stopwatch
  8. Do whatever you want in the game or you can also go back to PS4 menus, find a bright scene where you can notice a brightness drop easily
  9. When the stopwatch hits 6 minutes, you should see the TVs brightness suddenly drop by a large amount. By eye the brightness drop seems about equal to dropping the brightness from 50 -> 30 by hand.
  10. Go to picture settings and set local dimming to low (brightness does not change)
  11. Set local dimming back to standard (brightness suddenly jumps to the original level. Brightness can be restored by switching input away and back as well, or by disabling and re-enabling game mode)
  12. And again after EXACTLY 6 minutes the bug again repeats and the brightness drops down again

Some other notes: The PS4 has a screensaver that basically dims the screen if it is idle for a while. This is not the cause of this, this happens even when the console is in active use and the brightness can be restored temporarily by changing the local dimming setting like described above. I have not managed to reproduce this issue with game mode off, so it seems to be related to game mode.

Yes, we're sharing videos! :smiling-face:

Here is my video of purple ghosting with Firmware 1460.9

And one for the scanlines (FW 1460.9)

And 2 photos of non functional Local Dimming :

But Samsung doesn't acknowledge any issue... and to be clear, this a set that has had its motherboard AND screen replaced!!!

My 65Q90T XXN (Belgium) model:

Technician comes on Friday, DSE (Dirty Screen Effect) disturbs me on the right from the center. The grid is much more visible than on other parts of the screen. What do you think?

I am in Belgium too, how did you manage to make them send a technician?

When I asked Samsung to do so, here is what happened to me :

1- they did a remote picture test via WhatsApp, didn't detect any issue, so they refused to send anyone

2- they did the same remote picture test via the phone support line, didn't detect any issue, so they refused to send anyone

3- after contacting them via Twitter, they agreed to send someone

4- the confirmation that the company responsible for technical support (Servilux)  came from WhatsApp

5- Servilux contacted me the next day to get the information about my issues (Samsung didn't send them)

6- then nothing... when I called Servilux, they told they contacted Samsung and that it had been told to them that the tv had no issue

7- the repair file I can follow Online is stuck in "manufacturer calls the client"... which never happened of course

8- I went through my retailer (Fnac) which miraculously agreed to take back my tv to repair it (when I called back a few days later, they almost asked me to go through the closest store even though I bought the tv on the webstore)

9-Fnac took back the tv and sent it to Samsung

10- Samsung changed the screen and motherboard (and, as far as I know, never checked the issues, especially after the change)

11- the tv came back with the same issues

12- now Samsung is not answering my posts on @Samsungbelgique, nor on their WhatsApp account

13- Fnac is trying my patience by telling me repeatedly that the person that could do something in my case is either "not available" or "already gone", and that they will call me "first thing tomorrow", every day for 3 days now

So if you have a direct way to get a tech coming to your home, please tell me (even by private message if you want)! :smiling-face:

I bought it from Vandenborre - I have good experience with them - and they send the technician . We'll see how things will go.

Thanks for sharing your way.

Good to know about Vandenborre for next time...

Just by curiosity, since you have bought the tv from the same country, do you experience only bad DSE, or do you also have these issues :

- purple/green ghosting

- local dimming not functioning in Game Mode

- scanlines

(see my previous post on this page for examples)

I can't test game mode as I don't have any console.

Other than DSE there was the dimming bug when subtitle appears on screen in HDR mode(1403.1), and since the new firmware (1460.9), as additional, the 6-7 mins local dimming bug while running HDR content.

So guys (and especially anyone experiencing ghosting on their set), I managed to get a document from the service company (wasn't that hard, I just had to wait 30 minutes on the phone and then ask for it) with Samsung confirming that everything was "normal" and "within specs" when faced with purple ghosting.

Here is what the document says (redacted for translation from Dutch to English and for preserving my privacy)

To better understand, here is the video I sent them for evidence :

Yep, everything "within specs is normal"...

So I guess Samsung is now officially saying that purple ghosting is perfectly part of the Q90T specs, I hope they update their tv's ads to include that.

Oh, and Samsung's reps have no idea what company swapped my tv's motherboard and screen, but it's not the one in the message, as they confirmed having never received a tv with mine's serial number.

Aaaaand my retailer doesn't agree to do any exchange, they want to take back the tv and send it to Samsung again for repair (what good can come from that if Samsung thinks everything's right with these issues).

Frustration is growing...

In my case, black screen happens to me on some occasions when I start ps5, it is solved by deactivating the dhcp of the console, the rest of the problems or I do not appreciate them or I do not experience them, I do not know who should solve the problem, if sony or Samsung .
