Card Reader/SD Issue

I'm a photographer - when I'm traveling I backup photos to my tablet.  My new Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE (upgrade from Samsung Galaxy Tab S3) is not allowing the card reader to upload photos from an SD card.  It recognizes the Reader but only allows charging - all other options are greyed out.  I have switched Card Readers, changed SD cards, changed Default USB configuration to Transferring Images in Developer Options.  My Galaxy A53 5G phone recognizes the Reader/SD card and allows upload of photos - I've tried to compare settings but can't find anything that works.

Hi,and welcome to the community.

Plug your tablet into your Laptop or PC using the supplied cable. Plug your card reader (or insert the SD card) into the same Laptop or PC. Xfer everything to the tablet.

Thank you for your reply. I don't carry a laptop when I travel due to weight restrictions. I backup photos every day and have been going through the extra step of uploading photos to my cell phone (no problem there) then transferring to the tablet - it allows image transfers from the phone but not a card reader!  I can (and will) continue to do the "two step" backup, but I would think since I was able to upload to the S3, and can upload to the phone, and can transfer from the phone to the tablet that there is a setting that does not allow the tablet to recognize a SD card?

Presumably, the sd card doesn't fit directly into the tablet, or you wouldn't be using a reader.

Can you say what make and model card reader you have and what connection type is uses. Just wondering if the reader supports OTG and is compatible with USB 2.0

When you plug into it, pull down from top of tablet screen. Do you see any notifications?

Thanks for sticking with me!  I have 2 Readers - SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II USB-C Reader (Model SDDR-409) & Anker (not sure what model) - they connect with the standard USB Type C cable.  I've used SanDisk, Transcend, and Lexar SD cards. The pull down menu shows "Charging connected device via USB" - when I select other options all the "Use USB for" options are greyed out (it shows Transferring images selected but also greyed out).

Are those readers OTG and compatible with USB 2.0, which is the speed of your tablets USB port?

They are advertised as Plug n Play  - not sure if that's the same as OTG?  They are compatible with 2.0.

Basically, if the reader is OTG it means that it will be recognised as a 'device' or 'host'. Not much point plugging into it if your tablet doesn't know it's there.

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II USB-C Reader (Model SDDR-409) is USB 3.0. It's not OTG. So, your tablet can't see it.
Unsure about your Anker.

At this point, I'm unsure if an OTG adapter would help here.

Thank you for your help - I'll try a card reader that specifies OTG.
