@T48 It's the smallest of swipes, I seem to do it fairly consistently. Practice it on the home screen - if you swipe down the notifications/app drawer, then you've started your swipe too high. I have 3 icons in the dock, so there is one in the middle above the home button. The Swipe needs to start roughly on that middle icon - as though your finger is in position to tap and open that app, but you just swipe down instead (not a tap-hold-swipe although that works, but just a swipe).
Go into Settings> Accessibility> Interaction and Dexterity> Tap and hold delay
Adjust it to medium (1 second)
Now when you try to go into one handed mode it should recognize the one handed mode gesture before you interact with the app you're in. It might help with consistency
