Despite having a black screen and the charger not being plugged in it has remained quite warm for several hours, it was fully charged when the screen screen went black. I have tried pressing the volume up button and the start one at the same time without effect.
Does anyone have any advice please?

You could try a hard reset but this procedure can delete your information in the phone > samsung-g935f-galaxy-s7-edge/Hard Reset. or visit a Samsung Experience Store or Samsung Service Centre.

I assume when you joined 3 they provided a sim card with a temporary number while you ported your own number in from another network ?
What's happening in that case is the phone is picking up on the temporary number.
The option I'm aware of is to ask 3 to sim swap your number from your current sim card to a new blank sim card that's never had a number assigned to it.
