Unread Messages

If I open up messages app it highlights there are unread messages but the main icon on home screen has no notification. Yes I get the notification and number of unread initially when a message happens or the notification is still in notification centre but I thought that even if I cleared this notification the icon would still show there were unread messages. Is this not the case? I can't find an app that does this. Are there any?

Once you clear the notifications, the App icon badges are removed. In the Messages app  you will still see unread messages highlighted.

I am not aware of any app that retains badges after notifications are cleared.
