Glass is glass and will scratch but from experience it takes something hard like grit to cause the scratch.
Other causes is that the olephobic coating is getting marked up.
This is why I always use the factory fitted screen protector or the Whitestone Glass Screen protector.

Yes the Whitestone Glass Screen Protector works well with the Fingerprint scanner @eyeintheskyswdrone

A tip I picked up was to lay one of the tubes of silicone adhesive on the work surface I'm using and if it does not roll then the surface is flat. @Easty
