Keyboard issues after S20 OS August 2021 Update

Hi, my first post here.

So I installed the latest OS update today morning on my S20 FE 5G and after that I have experienced strange touch screen or keyboard issues. When ever I try to write something with my keyboard it just lags or I have severe misspellings. The keyboard frequently doesn't recognize when I press the letter or it writes the same letter two or three times. It's very frustrating!

I have read on another forum users suffering the same issues. Anybody here have same problems?

I have rebooted the phone and changed the keyboard without success. I tested a Touchscreen testing app and it shows the actual touchscreen works very well with no issues. I didn't have any problems before installing the latest update. Any ideas what to do next?

Kernel version: 4.19.113-22378117

Security patch level: Sep 1 2021.

Same issue here, though this is on a new phone just bought in January 2022. It was reasonable'ish but got horrible when I applied a screen protector.
What did help for me to some extend:

  • at Accessibility->Interaction and dexterity: set the touch-and-hold delay to 1 sec
  • at General Management -> Samsung Keyboard settings
    • Swipe, touch, and feedback: set Keyboard touch and hold delay to Long (0.5 seconds)
    • turned off Predictive text, Suggest emojis, Auto replace
    • at 'More typing options' turned off Auto capitalize
    • Font size: set it to the maximum size
    • Size and Transparancy: increased the keyboard size a bit

Does not completely solve the issue, but made things a bit better for me. Hope this may help for others.

This is a bad suggestion and if you think about what each setting does, will make it blatantly clear that it will not help this problem. This is nothing but snake oil recipe with placebo effect.

  • Accessibility->Interaction and dexterity: set the touch-and-hold delay to 1 sec

The problem is our phone is a busted digitizer. Setting touch and hold delay to 1second means you'll have to hold your finger on the screen for LONGER meaning during that time there's higher chance of digitizer crapping out and stop registering your touch aborting touch-and-hold interaction. This setting is intended for people with limited finger dexterity who can not move them fast enough so this setting allows them to adjust touch-and-hold interaction to be slower, and get rid of accidental ones. THIS IS NOT THE PROBLEM WITH OUR PHONE.

  • at General Management -> Samsung Keyboard settings
  • Swipe, touch, and feedback: set Keyboard touch and hold delay to Long (0.5 seconds)

This is exactly the same nonsense change. You are intentionally making your keyboard SLOWER, increasing the chance that digitizer will stop tracking while you are trying to type.

  • turned off Predictive text, Suggest emojis, Auto replace
  • at 'More typing options' turned off Auto capitalize
  • Font size: set it to the maximum size
  • Size and Transparency: increased the keyboard size a bit

Why the hell would I turn off predictions and spelling corrections?! Those settings have nothing to do with touch screen digitizer. That's like changing your car's air freshener because engine has problems!🤦‍♂️And as if font size had anything to do with touchscreen.

None of those settings actually help with this problem. They obviously won't work with anything that doesn't use Samsung keyboard. They are nothing but self-brainwashing placebo.

A couple of days ago my phone got updated to Android12/OneUI4 and I'd say touchscreen situation is better than before. It still randomly loses tracking, but I think it's noticeably rarer now. I can rapidly tap on the screen for extended period of time and it continues to detect taps, unlike before where it would stop for 1-3 seconds at a time. Swiping also works more consistently. Occasionally it still loses tracking, but it is more tolerable now.🤞

I just got the UI4 Android 12 upgrade and my problems appear to have been fixed.

I also received the latest upgrade and I don't agree the problems with the touch screen and the keyboard have finally been solved. At least not for me.

Edit: I first thought the touch screen or the keyboard felt better and but actually the aren't. Still having the same problems with keyboard (doesn't recognize all the taps) and also touch screen. Not always able to select text to copy-paste.

I am not claiming that it solves the issue. But for me typing mistakes on the samsung keyboard are the sum of the failing keyboard, the size of my fingers in relation to the on-screen keyboard buttons, autocorrect kicking in when I don't want (sometime misrecognizing the right language). So, I turned of all features I could find that (may) contribute to my typing mistakes. And yes, bigger buttons do reduce my mistyping, so does turning off misbehaving autocorrect. The other touch things I indeed do not no for sure (just as many of the other suggestions on this site), but I can't rule out if they contributed or if it's just the bigger keys.

Furhter more, you can show a bit more respect in your replies. I'm not claiming that I am solving the real issue, but reducing other contributors to mistyping made my typing experience on the S20 slightly less miserable. Maybe I should have more clear on that;  for the rest I'm just as frustrated about this keyboard issue as you are.

Annoyingly the Android 12 has not made a difference. Typing remains problematic (keyboard not registering my taps). Disappointed Samsung have not solved this common (and very apparent) user inerface issue.

Even thought I thought wrote earlier the problems were solved by the latest upgrade, after the longer testing period I have to change my opinion that they aren't solved. Still keyboard is not not registering all the taps. Very dissapointing.

I'm responding because I don't see a resolution on this thread, but fear not because I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION!!! I also posted a similar rant about this problem earlier, but just wanted to update everyone else having this issue that I seem to have finally resolved it!!

The issue here--at least for me--seems to be tied specifically to the Samsung keyboard itself, so I disabled it and use another keyboard app I installed (Gboard). I am now able to type long messages without the keyboard crashing, so I dont lose all of my progress/text.  There are other keyboard app options besides Google/Gboard such as Swiftkey, but the idea here is to just completely bypass the terrible/dysfunctional Samsung default keyboard.

Here's the instructions for how I did it: How to change the awful Samsung default keyboard

Through my searching, I also found out there's an "undo" feature built in to the Samsung keyvoard, so you can recover text you accidentally deleted.  However, my issue was the entire keyboard would just crash, or cause the app I was using to crash (like my texting or messenger app), so this doesn't help there.  It's also kind of difficult to enable and actually use, but here's the info in case it does help someone: "Undo" gesture on Samsung keyboard (recover accidentally deleted text)

Hope this helps everybody experiencing this same issue, as I know I was so frustrated, I was about ready to throw the whole dang phone away!!

Not sure (or all the others) got a solution for this yet so I'm going to respond just in case.
