It seems like the app names were removed from the Edge Panel to clean up the interface, as apps that exceeded a certain character limit would sometimes have their names broken up over 2 lines, which looked untidy. As the Edge Panel is fully customisable, the app icons may be have been considered enough of a key identifier, without the need for the names underneath.
