@shorty61: Which messaging app are you using: Samsung Messages or Google Messages? It is possible that the issue is storage related, especially if you frequently text one another, therefore please try deleting some historic text messages to see if this helps.
If you're using Samsung Messages then please open the app > Tap the 3 dots in the top right > Settings > More settings > Delete old messages > On.
To backup your messages prior to deleting them, head to Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data > Toggle on 'Messages' > Back up now.
