It is absolutely useless displaying the time, whilst the phone is in the pockets or turned upside down. 

Informed Tech Support - Deaf no attempt made to change. 

The ambient sensor will resolve this issue.

Options
Always On Display will stay on all the time but you can turn it off so it displays for 10 seconds if you double tap the screen. Settings, lock screen AOD and make your selection.
