Today, 2nd December, when opening the Samsung Messages app I am getting a message asking me to upgrade to Google Messages app. Seems the end of Samsung Messages planned closure is getting nearer.

However, be prepared for the fact that you may have to switch to Google Messages. Look at it from this, my perspective. Your mobile carriers support chat and that's why you haven't experienced major bugs with Samsung Chat in case your mobile carrier doesn't support chat. Yes, you could set it up without a carrier, but it would stop working after a few days. And so on forever, some work, some don't. And the truth is, the regular SMS app is a thing of the past. I'm almost 100% sure that RCS will upgrade it. Google is pushing RCS as the new standard for SMS messages. And they're right about that. Samsung Messages without chat capabilities is a dead app. For many in the world. Because many mobile carriers don't support chat. And that's where Google comes in and I'm grateful to them for that.

I get this annoying message every week or so now - Google Messages has been disabled on my S24 Ultra for ages...

You don't need to disable RCS completely - you can set each contact to use either RCS or SMS
Tap the chat with the person, then tap the three dots in the top right corner, a drop-down menu will open, and you can select details.

Oops, I replied to you without even thinking about the fact that you might be using Samsung Messages. I don't know about Samsung Messages, what I replied to you is about Google Messages.
