Z Flip 4 Screen Damage/Crease detaching from phone/Black screen

I can't believe I'm in this situation. I bought a brand new Z Flip from Samsung in January  '23, and just two weeks ago, the center crease started making a weird cracking sound when I tried to open or close it. I didn't think much of it at the time, but when I woke up the next morning and tried to flip open my phone, I was horrified to see that it looked like black ink had run over the screen. On closer inspection, it became clear that the screen was coming off the phone from the crease in the middle. I immediately got in touch with Samsung repair and the phone was collected a few days ago.

But now, I've just received an email from Samsung that has left me feeling absolutely betrayed. According to their inspection, my device will not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty and they are asking for £349 to repair it when it cost over £1000 paid in full. This is disgraceful! I refuse to spend so much money on a phone that suddenly chooses to wake up worthless on a random morning leaving me stranded. And to add insult to injury, I've since found out that this is a common problem with the Z Flip - the phone screen comes detached at the crease!

I will not stand for this kind of treatment from Samsung. I'm absolutely appalled that a company of their size and reputation would treat their customers in this way. I will be taking this matter further and complaining to the ombudsman. Samsung needs to take responsibility for this issue and provide a fair and reasonable solution for its customers.

I tried to prevent my screen crease from getting worse, because it was getting pretty bad after 8 months of folding the phone. Before the warranty was up I put in a service request. I tried to go to local options that Samsung's repair ticket request directed me to (Best Buy, You Break We Fix) but was told only Samsung directly could fix Flip/Fold screen issues. So I had to send in my phone and be without it for 5 days (which was notably faster than they'd expected).

Sent it in to get a new factory-set screen protector. They wanted to charge me because of a nick in the screen, one that I don't understand how it happened. Kind of looks like I shut my phone on something, but there's nothing on the opposite end, so honestly, that nick confuses me. They referred to this as microscopic damage, so small they said they couldn't send me a photo of it. Regardless, since the crease from the folding would inevitably happen again in a year, I didn't see a $240 repair cost as worth the benefit and had the phone sent back without repair. Plus $240 was more than the current difference between trading in a perfect phone vs. "cracked" screen. Photos show how my phone was returned. Not only does it look considerably worse than it did beforehand (30+ bubbles in the factory set screen protector and a sticky note left under the screen protector), it also makes a cracking sound when I try to fold it. The Flip and Fold are extremely neat concepts, and honestly, I've loved every other aspect of it - but wait until the screen technology is improved on the physical fold. In following up to see if anything could be done about the worsened state of my screen, it appears all procedures were followed correctly on Samsung's end, and I'd just have to pay the $240 to have it repaired.

I see what I tried to do as Samsung's attempt at a "fair and reasonable solution for customers" and just wanted to warn that they are not flexible in the slightest with that repair, even though they know the crease is their fault, and on top of being without a phone for at least 5 days, it's very possible it could be returned worse than before with zero consolation on Samsung's part. Except for the customer service folks profuse apologies :') I told them that doesn't make it better and honestly, I'd prefer they don't apologize if they have no means of making up for it. But I get it. I'd feel bad if my hands were tied in helping unfairly treated customers too.

The only thing that makes this better? Everyone, every friend, acquaintance, waitress, etc. who sees I have the cool Flip phone likes to check it out and ask about it. My phone looks like ***** now, and all I can do is show it off and encourage people to wait on the technology and tell them my story. Still feels like a loss on my part, but Samsung will be the one who loses out most on unrepaired fold/flip screens and the tech not being good enough to last even a year.

Before, day I sent in for repair. Before, day I sent in for repair. After it was returned, without repairAfter it was returned, without repairPhone didn't make an awful noise before when I would fold it, now it does :/Phone didn't make an awful noise before when I would fold it, now it does 😕

I also had exactly similar experience like @Savage Ape my phone has gone for repair they have asked me for £)349 which I refuse to pay will drag them to the consumer court as it looks like a common problem...it showed a dot along the middle and in the night it was like black ink on the screen ...its best if the company recalls its faulty product....or else its in for trouble. Its making money from repairs I guess now ...

I have zflip4 phone I only had it for 5months and in the fold it started making lines across it and was getting worse I got in with Samsung repair which 02 told to get in touch as I fid by it from 02. They said I would have to send to them to check it out do I did after a few days I rang them to see if they have sorted the problem they turned round and said they had not seen anything like it before which I did not really believe them so they said it could not be repaired so I had to have some strong words with them and eventually said they would send a replacement  phone  which I was not very happy about as they did not say it would be a new one, so when the replacement arrived to ne I was still not if it was new, at least I did not have to pay anything as I went back to 02 and explained what had happened I also said would interfere with my warranty they said no and I asked for proof of thst what they said.  But now it has happened  again to zflip4  what they sent to me which is not a year old so I just don't know what to do this time as I can't believe it has happened again just after a year  and still in my  contract. I very disappointed with the zflip4 aftercare service, I do find it okay to use in every way and not bulky in anyway also, so I am in a bit of a quandary in what to do, any suggestions.

Do you have the link to your post please?  How did you get on, many takers?

I've recently had this happpen to me too, cut along the crease of the phone (that does sometimes actually cut my finger when I'm scrolling btw) as well as the usual huge bubble along the entire crease from where the the screen has lifted.  Cracking noise every time I close the phone, I'm decidedly worried every time I do this that it will just no longer be working next time.

Took my one year old flip 4 in to the EE Repair Centre in Newcastle, UK (under warranty until 12/2024) only to be told that I had voided the warranty because there are some tiny nicks on the screen, that have zero to do with the MANUFACTURING problem.  They could quite happily repair it for me but were going to charge me £420 for the pleasure, so I politely declined.

Very pleased I found this thread!

Having exactly the same issue. Sent phone for repair under warranty. Samsung examine it under a microscope and then any scratch or mark , they tell you it's caused by impact which voids the warranty. It has not been dropped and I expect some degree of durability from a £1k phone. Quote £339. Apparently it also has a puncture mark in the screen. This can be caused by something as tiny as a grain of sand apparently and tbh I expect more durability from a £1k phone. Samsung informed me it would have to be pushed into the screen to affect it. I can promise you Samsung I have not been sitting here grinding sand into my phone! If any grain has perforated my screen I would suggest it may be because the hinges became resistant and creaky and more force was required to close it and as your operator informed me , the screens are very soft. This is not my fault but a fault with the phone.

Now I see this is a very common issue and when you contact Samsung you are basically told "too bad! "

I am in the process of taking action via the consumer rights act 2015. This is in relation to the poor quality of the product, nothing to do with the warranty. However Samsung respond with the same message about the phone no longer being under warranty which is a completely moot point .

It's incredibly frustrating and I genuinely don't feel I will ever buy a Samsung product again after this experience.

Yes, after searching high and low I found the receipt, and they refunded the £349 repair costs.
