Custom notifications scrambled?

Hello!  I had custom notifications on my Note 20 5G so I tried to set up my Z Flip 4 the same way.  After assigning the custom tones for text messages, however, I'm finding that they are scrambled.  You can imagine my surprise when I heard the tone I set for my wife and found it was a text from someone else.  This has happened in multiple cases and, for some, it appears that setting the tone for one person actually set it for multiple people.  Help!  What the h@#$ is going on?

What method are you using to set custom tones @jegert 

On my phone I use this route.

Settings > Apps > Messages > Notifications  > Notification Categories  > New Messages > Sound > Choose Sound.

From the text messaging app: three dot menu -> Details -> notifications -> Sound
