Notification help

I just noticed that whenever I get new messages /emails/voicemails I hear the notigication but my phone no longer tells me the number of items that are new when i look at my phone causing me to miss important calls/messages.  Does anyone know how I fix this to shlw the new items when I glance at my phone?  Thanks for advice!

@DarleneC: Please can you try heading to Settings > Notifications > App icon badges (On) > Status bar > Show notification icons (On). Let me know if this helps.
