I've had the phone for a few weeks and done nothing more than take it in and out of my pocket. It hasn't been dropped. The pocket it lives in never has anything else in it. Yet there's an inch-long scratch in the middle of the screen.
It seems I'm not alone

I don't consider this fit for purpose. I shall be returning.

The point I will make is that if a screen is easily scratched as a trade-off against breakage it should come with a protector. I've never applied a screen protector to any Samsung I've had in the last five years and never had a scratch like this, so it isn't fit for purpose.

There is no sand in my pockets.

Sorry to hear this has happened @Mr_Ed
Buying direct from Samsung comes with a 14 day returns window.
I feel the scratch is in the anti reflective coating and not the actual screen 🤔
It's likely they'll attribute this to accidental damage.
As others do I always fit a screen protector.
Mine is the Spigen Glas.tR EZ Fit Glass Screen Protector.
A protector like the Whitestone Dome Glass Screen protector may hide the scratch.
The caveat is that the anti reflective aspect of the phone would be lost.
Do let us know how you get on please.
