Smart select - curious change

In looking at my Recents in my phone app, I wanted to copy a phone number and reverse look it up. 

Normally I would use my S Pen, press the S Pen's button and select Smart select. 

Now when I try and select that number, I can't grab it to post elsewhere though I could paste it to a Note if I wished. 

It seems we have more options but I just wanted to copy, hold it, and paste it into Google Search. 

Try what I just explained and see if you're as frustrated as I am with this novel ... improvement.

Yes i find the same.

I tried to post a screen recording showing me going through the motions but my recording was preemptively deleted because of the private nature of the information.

Yes, now it requires 4 clicks (last click is select copy) to copy the number

It seems the fastest way for me, which is a step back from Smart select's earlier version, is to encircle the material in question and Pin it ... and then write out the information long hand.  

One step forward, two steps back.
