Hello @Geezauk and may Welcome you to the Samsung Community Forum.
This issue isn't happening with my phone and I use Bose QuietComfort Ultra Over-Ear Wireless Headphones.
It might be worth just double checking all the relevant preferences.
Try clearing the individual caches and if necessary data too.
That and or delete the pairing and start again.
If you perform a forum search you may find existing threads with some further help or guidence within.
If i can be of any further help please don't hesitate to ask 😎

The advice I offer is my own and does not represent Samsung’s position.
I'm here to help. " This is the way. "

I got the same issue with my phone. It just started happening a couple weeks ago. I have not changed any settings or whatsoever.
This issue happened a couple times in another vehicle (Toyota Hilux 2023) and now every single time on my own vehicle (Mazda3 2014).
It's weird. What happens is that when it is connecting through BT to the vehicle, it connects the "phone" functions first (as in calling or receiving calls), and that's when it seems to be on a call. You can still hear through your phone speakers far in the background the media and notifications sounds from the phone. After a few seconds, it hangs up the call itself and that's when the "media" functions (as in playing music, personal assiatnt) become available on the vehicle through BT.
Is no biggie, but it is weird, annoying and it did not use to happen.
