Having had this phone for just over a week it's absolutely amazing and awesome I'm still getting used to the Ai etc but no complaints just one very minor nag I can't put my Halifax card on smart pay due to Halifax grhhhh

Congratulations for owning the beast of mobile phones. Regarding your Halifax on smart pay , try to use Google pay, should be working with no issues at all.

My understanding is that EVEN if the bank doesn't directly support Samsung Pay+, the Samsung wallet can still manage through collaboration with a third party service "Curve"

This phone is a powerful device indeed and I've had no buyers remorse purchasing mine. 

Have you tried Google Wallet as a payment option.
