Selecting alternative words in Autocorrect

Options for words come up in a box above my text, but if I select a word, nothing happens. How can I USE an alternative word which I select?

@NightKitty: When you see word suggestions appearing above the keyboard as you type, simply tap on the word you want to add, as this will auto-populate it in the text field.
