I have this problem too

I run a YouTube channel and want to use the rear facing camera to film my videos rather than the selfie camera. What I normally do is set up the phone on a tripod with the rear camera facing me, I then use Smart View to mirror the phone screen to a laptop to use as a camera monitor so I ensure I stay in shot.

My old phone the S20+ did this faultlessly, my wife's Huawei P20 Pro also does this faultlessly, as does my sons S22 Ultra. My brand new all singing all dancing S23 Ultra however, does not.

When I cast my phone to the laptop it detects the laptop fine, I select the laptop in the list,  then get the "Start mirroring with Smart View" message on my phone, I then click "Start Now"... I then get the message on the laptop "Andys S23 Ultra is about to project". From then on the screen is blank, the phone is projecting fine, but the laptop screen is blank. I know it's not the laptop as it's working with every other phone I throw at it so it has to be the S23 Ultra.

Is it too good for the laptop? The laptop has 32gb of ram, and an Invidia 2gb graphics card running Windows 11 so it should be more than man enough. Could it be a phone software issue? If I can't get this sorted I'll be sending it back to EE as it was the camera that I upgraded for. If I can't get this working I'll just downgrade to an S22 Ultra.

What I do need to say, is I called Samsung Tech Support and they advised they've had no feedback from anyone that there is an issue with the Smart View app. I called EE, and they're at a loss also. I downloaded a third party mirroring app from the Play Store and it worked absolutely fine, so it's looking like a bug with Smart View.

Any ideas?

Andy

Hi, @Bettsaj. What you've described is very unusual - especially as you've been able to mirror your other phones' displays to your laptop.

It should be noted, however, the Smart View is intended for use with Smart TVs.

At this stage, I'd recommend consulting the guide below (created by our friends at Samsung Singapore):

https://www.samsung.com/sg/support/mobile-devices/troubleshooting-a-problem-when-using-smart-view/

If these steps do not facilitate you in resolving the issue, I recommend utilising Samsung Flow, which is an app designed to mirror content between your phone and tablet, laptop, or PC :

Please let me know whether you get better results when using Samsung Flow.

Hi Andy I know that this is an ancient post and youve probably got to this point already, but my girlfriend and I do a similar thing with our steaming for a behind view which also shows our screens, mainly because the x0.6 zoom fits a lot more in the shot.

For this we end up using the Link To Windows feature, and I highly recommend it if I'm honest as it allows you to still have full control of your pc. There are a few snags that we had to work around:

1. The camera auto shuts off when not recording. I think some 3rd party camera apps can be set up in the debug / standby menus to never sleep but I spent a long time trying to do this with the default camera app and the settings always got ignored. I gave up and just used an autoclicker that basically keeps tapping on the screen keeping it awake. Out of the 2 that I tried i found that the one called "OP Auto clicker" works just fine, just set the target on the bottom left of the screen out the way so it doesnt show fully and set it to tap every 15 seconds. The only issue with this is that it shows the UI, we used to just press record to hide it, then we cropped them out, now we dont really care lol

I was meant to create a basic camera app for this that just shows the picture and no UI and see if that will never time out, but never got around to it, and also the 3rd point below..

2. Now I cant remember the reasoning behind this, I just vaguely remember it being a godsend at the time. But the Windows Power Tools contains an "Always on Top" feature that might be useful to you? I just always put it on when im setting up and cant even remember why.

3. Lastly, the phone will get hot! Apparently its why the camera timeout can not be disabled. Just keep a fan on it and you'll be fine. I bought a cheap little fan that attaches on the back of the phone, works well but we needed to get a new bracket to hold the phone with it.

We use streamlabs, with 3 total cameras, my PC just wouldn't show a 3rd webcam for some reason, this is so much better as its wireless and a pretty good camera with all sorts of bells and  whistles.

Oh yeah, another feature of Link to Windows is that you can still use apps and stuff while the camera is still working, it allows you to mirror your screen, but also open apps outside of your main phone screen in a new window on your PC. I did try opening the camera in a separate window to see if it still shuts off, it does. Either way just set your streaming application to record the window of either the camera app, or your phone screen with the camera app running, Either press record or play on the autoclicker aqnd off you go.

(I think it gets hotter when its running on the phone screen, but the screen obviously makes setting up the angle a lot easier.)

(Recording makes the phone get hot a lot quicker, we have streamed for hours with no issues with a fan, but have also reached some ungodly temperatures without one and while not recording so be careful.)

(Set the camera ratio to full (I think, basically the whole screen) I find that landscape is perfect for a small box in the corner of your main camera, but i also find the portrait to be perfect to have scaled up from top to bottom of your main camera and then placed on the far left (then scale down slightly for border effect), this is good for if you want larger more targeted shots. The front camera is probably 20x better than any webcam, with the ability to zoom out (and in obviously) and not to mention all of the features, although the selfie camera looks like a microwave screen after using the front camera )

Good luck.

Nick.
