I just updated my S23+ to the latest firmware and noticed that generative AI (Galaxy AI) features have been added nearly everywhere without a way to fully remove them. I personally really HATE generative AI for quality, ethics, and privacy reasons, and I want a way to fully REMOVE (or, at the very least, fully disable!) it.
In addition to that, unnecessary software restrictions broke several of my third-party apps, including my custom theme (Hex Installer), which, in my opinion, is unacceptable.
Blocking the ability to disable preinstalled apps and services, even though ADB (which has been possible for decades up until now!) is not acceptable behaviour, and if Samsung doesn't change their ways very soon, my next phone will not be Samsung.
This means:
- remove the recent permission blocks from the shell/system user (adb, UID 1000) or have a way to fully disable them
- restore the ability to use custom themes through third party apps (make com.samsung.android.permission.MODIFY_THEME and related permissions unrestricted or at least user accessible)
- have a way to fully remove or disable Galaxy AI
As I said, if these things don't change soon, my next phone won't be Samsung anymore.

Even if you could disable the entire AI, you can't prevent yourself from coming into contact with the AI. Soon, all your complaints, suggestions, praise or criticism, regardless of which company you send them to, will be answered precisely with AI. AI enables companies to respond more quickly and efficiently to all complaints, and enables them to send personalized ads. This is the age of AI and you'll have to get used to it...or you'll have to stop using the internet altogether.

i do not want the AI on my phone though. also, you can very much still use the internet without coming into contact with AI - but that's besides the point.
my complaint is about Samsung locking their software down more and more, to a point where I don't want to use it anymore.

the google AI can be easily uninstalled using ADB - Samsung's garbage is integrated into core system features like the screenshot app, and the Galaxy AI category is hardcoded into the Settings app.

So your next phone will be a Pixel (with integrated Google AI) or an iPhone (with integrated Apple AI) or the Chinese ones that also have AI, but don't even tell you that they integrated it? Good luck finding a phone without AI today.

Hey @rooot
You can disable or only allow on-device processing for the Galaxy AI features. There's also a "master switch" to disable all cloud-based processing for the Galaxy AI features. To find this, navigate to Settings > Galaxy AI > Tap the switch by Process data only on device.

Google lets you easily install custom ROMs on their pixel phones. GrapheneOS is a very popular option without AI garbage shoved into it.
Samsung does not support custom ROMs the same way as they purposefully make their hardware difficult to support. Also, installing a custom ROM on Samsung phones voids the warranty, which it does not do on Pixel phones. At all.
