GOOGLE RCS messages refuse to mute

This is driving me up the bl@@dy wall. The mute function in RCS messaging is no longer working. I HAVE to be in touch with the person concerned, and the only way I currently have around the problem, is to turn off notifications for ALL messages so I don't completely lose my mind. This is not a workable solution. It was working and now it's not. Please help before I throw my phone through a window.

Open the chat you want to mute, tap the three dots in the top right, select Details, select Notification and you can choose priority, allert, silent.

This morning there was an update  Google Messages in Google Play

Sadly not. I had to stop using rcs chat and switched to a messaging service that actually mutes effectively.
