Problem:
Connecting phone (s23) to any computer/laptop does not work as it does not show the phone icon and thus not allow file transfer, only charging. On Ubuntu there is a phone icon but still does not work and error is given after clicking icon and waiting. Other Samsung phones all do work on same computers (Windows and Ubuntu) so it seems to be a phone problem. I did select MTP in notification and also tried PTP, also tried changing setting in developer mode to MTP as default. Safe mode is no different.
What does work:
Connecting a portable SSD directly to phone does work. ADB connection does work. Windows Device manager does detect a MTP device but with generic name (something like MTP USB device) instead of phone name (there are no errors about drivers).
What I tried:
I have already checked/tried everything so no need to answer with common things like drivers, developer mode, usb cables, usb ports, safe mode, wiping cache in recovery and trying smart switch.
I have also cleared data in system apps for USB settings, MTP and storage related apps, but it did nothing. The phone is not rooted and has never been rooted.
What I do not know:
I do not know if it worked before because I don't think I have connected the s23 to a computer before this attempt.
SUMMARY: Windows "is" detecting "a" (generic) MTP USB device in the background as a Portable Device (as can be seen in Windows Device Manager), but the phone does not show up in "This PC" of ANY of the computers/laptops I tried it with while other Samsung phones do work (with a specific phone name for Portable Devices in device manager) on the same computers/laptops I tried. It also does not work on computers with Ubuntu. I believe that something on the phone is wrong and prevents Windows from fully recognizing the phone for media transfer (PTP does not work either). A direct connection to a portable SSD does work.
Does this ring any bells for someone? I prefer not to do a factory reset (not sure if it helps either). I will first wait for a another One UI update before trying a factory reset.
EDIT: I have added info about trying it also with Ubuntu

Can you please describe how exactly it was resolved? This issue appears in many forums with absolutely no clear solving pattern. Definitely, if Samsung will continue doing another iPhones (no micro-SD etc.) S23 will be the last Samsung model I owned 😕

Ah, ok, I see now. Full factory reset. Wonderful. Another way Samsung make easy things complicated. What was a reason to eliminate USB connection settings from the system?

Can I ask you if all data on your S23 was saved after full reset? Mainly photos and videos. Thanks in advance for a reply

Hallo @Members_tQ0eZmf,
Thank you for your message. have you made sure that the cable you are using is also for datatransfer and not only for charging?
With kind regards,
Ajay

Dear Ajay-A, of course I did. I used this phone for more than a year with same cable and everything was working. Just about a month ago after some updates the phone stopped connecting to any PC. Lower A version of Samsung (by the way, with micro-SD slot) is working perfectly with the same cable. The truth is that all S-range models of Samsung with each year becoming more i-Phone-like, loosing all qualities that made Samsung better. The absence of micro-SD is just one of them.

Thank you for your response Members_tQ0eZmf,
If you don't wan't to do a factory reset, you can via the Samsung Members-app also send in an error report to my colleagues of the R&D department. They can investigate this and when this can be resolved by an update this will be rolled out as soon as possible.
With kind regards,
Ajay
