Is it worth updating to One UI 7.0? I believe I am on the most up to date software prior to the major change. Lots of people have said they don't like the update and I don't like change so I'm undecided😅

They are optional because if you want to have a device with security issues that hackers can exploit, it is your prerogative. In the same way that if you want use an app which has a bug, you are entitled to.

Your device, your choice.

They aren't exactly optional. They just don't auto install. If you were in the middle of something important and the phone rebooted to update, you'd be really mad. So you get to pick when you're free enough to install it. Plus if you really just don't want to install any updates, you can just not do them. But you will gain more and more security issues by doing so

Which is fair enough but if a change can be stopped I'm all for it😊

So why aren't updates automatic?

I've not encountered any more security risks though?

When a new security update comes out, all the issues that were fixed get listed. If a phone is months out of date, someone could use that list to see all the issues your phone currently has.

It also means if you happen to get malware, it'll have a higher chance of doing harm since known problems haven't been fixed yet

They are automatic. However the user has the option to disable this.  @arianwen27 already mentioned why they do not auto install.

Imagine you are on an emergency call and the phone reboots in the middle of it.

We, users, do not check for security issues. Security teams, developers, academics usually find those. Fixes are released with the updates. Hackers take advantage of these and could technically take control of your device or install spyware.

In any case, if you do not want to update, it is your choice.

I know that but there's been no obvious security breaches, I'd probably know about it. I don't go on any sites I shouldn't and the only risky thing I do is leaving my phone to 15% charge before it's plugged in...
