Are you adding in material like photo's and kr sending large text messages.
If so this has the potential to automatically change a normal text into a mms.
I usually send photo's etc via WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.
In your phone launch the Messaging App > Press the 3 little dots in the top Rh corner > Settings > More Settings > Multimedia Messages > Look at the various options there.
Also in that section tap on Text Messages and choose GMS Alphabet which may help.
