Potentially dangerous S22 after software update

Hi, i've never posted before but felt compelled to report a recent event.

I installed a software update around Thursday on my S22, which i've had since new, and over the next few days the battery life plummeted rapidly.

By Sunday it was saying battery was near full, but within just a few hours with very little use it would suddenly shut down with no warning. I did all of the health check items, had to charge my phone several times over the day as it kept shutting down, and noted that the diagnostic stated I had a battery issue. A very broad diagnosis.

Needing my phone and its apps for work purposes as an instrumental teacher, and with my S22 in some strange reboot loop and therefore unusable, I decided to did out my old S10, so at least I had a working phone.

On taking my protective case off to remove my sim I was somewhat shocked to see the back of the phone had parted away from the frame of the phone around the middle in a curve shape. The phone is of course supposed to have a waterproof seal, the back I believe is toughened aluminium, and therefore the only conclusion I can come to is that some form of battery malfunction, possibly triggered by the update, has generated so much heat internally that it forced the back off the phone in that area. Had I not had a case on the phone who knows what damage, heat or chemical related could have occurred in my pocket. I have never had a phone of any  brand physically deform from internally like this, let alone a premium S model.

Samsung, please look into this as a matter of urgency. I will contact you personally after posting this message.

This is something that happens on occasion with all brands, yes you shouldn't use the phone and contact customer service for repair. It sounds like the battery has degraded or become damaged and as a result has puffed up causing the back of the phone to come away. It can also be due to storage, heat and lack of usage.

This is a customer to customer forum. So not monitored for issues like this by Samsung Customer Support.

What I will say is to stop using that phone straight away and call customer support to book a repair.
The battery is in need of replacement.

Thanks for all of your replies. I got through to Samsung via phone straight after posting this message, and they have arranged for a courier to collect for examination tomorrow. Cautiously put it into maintenance mode while connected to charger (only way to keep it on without shutting down mid act) and it then shut itself straight down soon after. Energy required to bend toughened aluminium from the inside outwards I would imagine to be huge. Feel lucky nothing happened while in my pocket.

Just stumbled across this thread, I highly doubt it's a battery issue seeming the device is roughly 2 years old and especially if it coincided straight after a device Software update.

Curious to know though, was it a security update or a device update, say for example going from Android 13-14.

My S10e is now apparently reporting a battery issue through the Diagnostic test also beyond my why they don't include it in the actual OS itself, instead of a separate app.

The actual fact is my battery is fine, several device info apps report my battery health as Good with no issue.

For a device bought back in 2019 the battery has only degraded by about 3% roughly.

Your issue with the phone back may probably be due to heat from the device getting trapped in the case, I'm referring to fully sealed cases i.e Life Proof, not to mention you stated the back was aluminium which is a good conductor and holder of heheat, also to note I have an A52 with the same issue of the back coming apart and that has definitely no battery issues.

I had this same problem happen Friday when i did the update to my galaxy S22.  Now it doesnt hold a charge, battery is beginning to swell.  Its so crazy because last month this happened to my fiances galaxy s22, and we had to pay an extra 100 dollars to fix the phone through tmobile, they claimed it was because he wasnt using an authentic charger.  I now see that MAJORITY of S22 are having this issue, and i have used an authentic charger since i bought this phone 2 years ago.  Now i too have to pay 100$ to get another S22, which will probably have the same thing happen in due time.  To me it sounds like a problem with the manufacturer and vendor of the s22 battery.  This is TOO common for this model.  Ive used galaxys since early 2009 and NEVER had a battery swelling issue, until now.  and both of the S22 phones i have doing the same thing 1 month apart is insane
