After spending too many hours on this problem this week, I finally decided to delete the google photos app on my phone. Problem solved.

I do have to add Samsung needs to get its act together. I switched from apple to android years ago when the Note 9 first came out and loved it.

Upgraded to the S22 the first day it was offered and it has been a royal pain with problems. I HATE my time wasted and fiddling around with this phone constantly is getting tiresome.

Did you turn the back up of in Google photos. Samsung doesn't use Google photos for back up as default it uses Microsoft one drive. Don't think Google photos is even comes installed on Samsung phone.

I had turned it off, even though it was never turned on to begin with. For 3+ years, I've only ever used DropBox and then, suddenly Google started backing them up.

Google photos  and the rest of the Google family of apps come as a package when you download Chrome as your browser, just like on a desktop.

Chrome was added the first day I got my phone and I never edited the apps that automatically came with it to exclude any. There was no need until last week when it randomly turned itself on, as a backup for my photos, and won't turn off.

Not true. It was not doing that until recently. My google data usage has always been approx. 31% because I basically use gmail and none of their other features. Overnight, I went to 98%.

Here is how it's supposed to be an optional feature:

AI Overview

To prevent Google from backing up photos from your Samsung Galaxy S22, you need to disable the backup and sync feature within the Google Photos app. This can be done by accessing the app's settings, finding the backup and sync option, and toggling it off.

Here's a step-by-step guide:
  1. Open the Google Photos app: Locate and launch the google photo app on your phone.

  2. Access Settings: Tap on your profile picture or account icon in the top right corner.

  3. Go to Photos settings: Select "Photos settings" (or similar, depending on your app version).

  4. Disable Backup & Sync: Find the "Backup & sync" (or "Sync and backup") option and toggle the switch to the off position.
