I've hardly downloaded any APK files, but I was wondering how you update them?
It might sound like a dumb question, but I have no idea.

You'd normally go back to where you got the APK and look for the updated version of the APK. Depends on who developed it.
Personally I'd steer clear of them. But I know some apps may not be available the normal route.
