Adaptive refresh-rate lag in video streaming S22 Ultra (Exynos).

Hi all,

I know this was a known "bug" about year ago, that streaming video media was laggy and stuttering (FPS drops) when the adaptive refresh rate turned on under motion smoothness in settings. It is the most noticeable when playing high resolution 4K HEVC video on all video players, even with hardware encoding enabled. Switching the phone to static 60hz eventually eliminates the lag problem, but I guess this shouldn`t be the right solution to make such a compromise like this for a flagship phone...

Another thing is that I have become aware of this anomaly not long ago with the latest Android 13 including the current 1 January 2023 update. I did a fresh clean install back in late October, so I`m quite sure this error is not coming from any malfunctions of the earlier Android version but might be one of the updates could cause it however, this is just my guessing.

I also can confirm that this bug occurs on my wife`s S22 Ultra phone as well (same Android version and update), exactly the same symptoms so we are quite sure that something is definitely not right in the current operating system we use, as this video playback lag happens in safe mode as well, therefore not the third party apps are the source  of the problem. Another interesting thing is, that when I asked other people in another forum who has this same mobile phone, they don`t have any lag issues at all when adaptive refresh rate turned on. Very weird.

Samsung, please investigate this, and issue an update please so I can finally use my phone`s all features with full of consistency. Thank you.

I have already contacted the Samsung`s support team in Samsung Members app and sent my system info as well, so hopefully someone is going to look into this.

I`m very disappointed after one year of this phone`s released, and I still have to struggle with such issues like this.

It's the refresh rate that goes down to 24Hz. Installing "Galaxy MaxHz" on my Galaxy S23 fixed the issue for me. I use app-specific settings : 60Hz for all video playing apps.

Facing this issue on my S24. An 800 euro phone having this issue is ridiculous and Samsung still no fix?

Galaxy s24 ultra here I can also say that this happens basically what's happening is the refresh rate drops down to 24 frames a second and adaptive mode and ever since ui 6.1 standard mode is now also adaptive mode but from 10 Hertz to 60 so now putting it in standard mode no longer solves the problem do you know how many times I have called Samsung only to speak to some Indian that doesn't even know what the hell I'm talking about. Do you know how many times I've sent messages to Samsung on the Samsung members app. This has been going on for over a year. How do people not notice this in the masses! Watching Hulu peacock Netflix is pretty much on watchable. Thankfully I found a third-party app called Galaxy Max hz which gets around this problem unfortunately you can't install this app the conventional way you have to use ADB shell in order to do this! You think Samsung would rectify this problem this isn't just a Galaxy s22 problem it's a software problem. And it's pissing me off that Samsung isn't taking this seriously

Go to developer options then go to showfps now open up Hulu peacock Netflix to be and tell me what your frame rate drops down to I can guarantee it drops down to 24 frames a second at minimum it should be playing at at least 30 60 if you want really smooth video. But I've been contacting Samsung for the last one year telephone and Samsung members app and still nothing has been done The problem is the adaptive refresh rate even putting the adaptive refresh rate into standard mode no longer solves this problem because standard mode is also adaptive but only up to 60 hz

The problem is that the adaptive refresh display drops it down to 24 frames per second if you go to develop options and you click on show FPS you will notice the frame rate drops to 24 when playing peacock Hulu Netflix or any of the streaming apps. It used to be able to be solved by throwing your phone into standard mode which was a quick fix but ever since update 6.1 now standard mode is also adaptive but to a certain point up to 60 hertz so basically it's just a software fixed and I've been calling Samsung on the phone but they're all a bunch of ***** basically they're all Indians from India that pick up the phones they have no idea of anything technical. I asked them to transfer me to somebody that can actually get in touch with the developers or somebody higher up and of course they can't do that so unfortunately if you have a Samsung phone you're fucced. There is a workaround there is an app called Galaxy Max hz you have to install this app through ADB shell so if you don't know your way around phones good luck with that. But I can choose any application on my phone and set a desired frame rate per app. But it shouldn't be like this.

This has nothing to do with the processor I'm on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 this has to do with the ***** software! I have a Galaxy s24 ultra I too also used to put it in standard mode when watching videos to solve the problem but you can no longer do this because standard mode is now also adaptive. I don't know how many times I've reached out to Samsung about this issue I've called them on the phone they don't fix anything, if this continues I'm not buying another flagship device from Samsung I'll just go get a Google Pixel phone. This could be fixed with a small update.

I've got a Galaxy S23 and, yes, unfortunately the only solution is Galaxy MaxHz. Works flawlessly though! Still a shame Samsung is not interested in fixing this. Watching videos on their flagship phones is not possible without modding... WTF?!?

I just wrote on Samsung members sent another error report this year That's like probably 10 of them so far. I'm just worried when android 15 comes out that is a slight possibility that Galaxy Max hz won't work . And also the fact that I'm paying $1,200 for a phone and it's displaying incorrectly I just don't know how Samsung and 90% of the population doesn't see this ! Thank God for that app.

It's a pain to install these days you have to use ADB shell ughhh. I'm going to continue the haunt Samsung with messages until they rectify this problem over one year a simple small little update would fix this but they are so worried about the ***** battery. I think that 30 frames a second would be good enough with no stuttering on the videos but it sure is nice to have Galaxy Max hZ.im.witb ya buddy

I was hoping after over almost 2 years of waiting that UI 7.0 would fix this problem with d frame rate and watching of streaming apps. Fortunately for one great developer there is Galaxy hz.which u can literally select what app u wanna set and how many hz u want it to run in. You think after countless times of explaining myself to Samsung in error reports that they would have rectified this problem. And you can't run it in standard mode because now standard mode is also adaptive up to 60 hz so that doesn't work anymore! Samsung needs to hire people outside the box .because they don't fix *****.
