Notification sounds issues

So I've just spent nearly an hour on the phone with an engineer that had remote access to my phone to try and figure out the issue that meant that all my apps - texts, Skype, Ring Doorbell, emails, ebay had the same notification sound. According to this so called 'expert', this is not a glitch, but just functionality that has been removed from Android 12.

I have a new S21 Ultra, and it cannot do something my Nokia phones 20 years ago did and that's to be able to change the tone for my text messages.

Her answer? Look at your phone when a notification comes in! So whereas I'd hear the doorbell ring, now I'm not sure if I have a text or an email. It's ridiculous.

What beggars belief is that she said this is NOT a glitch or a fault, but a deliberate removal of a useful function for no discernable reason.

We have 2 S1 Ultras in the house and the other phone has this issue too, so it's not just on my phone. Anyone else have this? What can we do? Is this is a Samsung/Android issue, we'll have to go to a different phone manufacturer as this is a vital basic function.

I have the same issue with A33 5G .... I have tried every 'fix' many of which are obvious like Sound and Vibration / App settings / clearing cache etc but although all have a sound set ... nothing happens. A totally ridiculous idea by someone ... will Samsung patch this? Probably not.

Anyone having problems - it appears that some of Samsung's battery optimisation measures are why alerts don't all work (see link below).

The other issues concern the convoluted way in which Samsung has devolved sound settings down to the App level (with Sounds and Vibration only creating the default that can be chosen in the individual Apps -  see below). So I have solved my text alerts and App icon Badge number issues in Android 13 (Samsung U.I. 5?) by the following:

Strangely you cannot set up a customer sound for 'Notifications' (only for 'Ringtone'), from the Sounds and vibration settings by selecting sounds (even though you are apparently offered just that option!), what you are setting there is a default that you can select on an App by App basis as follows:

You can adjust the notification of the Email App (and Whats App, Calendar alerts etc) by heading to Settings > Apps > Email (or which ever App you want an alert from )> Notifications > Notification categories > Select each of the the categories such as 'New emails' by long pressing> and you adjust the sound and other settings there.

You do the same for each App that you want to send alerts and carefully set the alert by tune or by default sound that you created in the Sounds and vibration settings. This also works for the badge notification icons (at least for me).

Its a real palaver but seems to address the issues of the wrong notification sounds playing and not seeing the badge counts icons - these all work for me now.

NB: This guide explains the issues with the battery saving measures set as phone defaults (as well as other 'fixes' for the last version UI of Android, which didn't prove useful) - As usual you take actions from web sites at your own discretion:

Personally I turned off battery power saving: Background usage limits (Put unused Apps to sleep); and the notification sounds and badge icons worked - the customised sounds were as set in the individual Apps (set as described above).

It seems ridiculous that Samsung are willing to sacrifice usability/functionality to eke a few more hours out of the phones - they could just stop loading the phone with unwanted bloat-ware that can't be removed, and put a bigger battery in (or allow batteries to be changed again, so we could just buy new batteries and fit them ourselves).

Thanks. But I solved issue via method described in my second post. Samsung default settings are often the cause of the problems.

I found the solution in this post, the keyword is "App provided notification sound".
